Migrating to the Cloud Without Downtime

Migrating production servers to the cloud is one of the highest-leverage things a team can do — but it is also where the most outages happen. The difference between a smooth migration and a painful one is almost always planning. Here is the playbook we use to move workloads to the cloud with zero downtime.

1. Why migrate (and when not to)

Migrating to the cloud buys you elasticity, better hardware (NVMe, 1 Gbps networks) and a 99.95% SLA. But if your current setup is stable and cheap, migrating for its own sake is not worth the risk. Migrate when you need scale, performance or reliability you cannot get from your current host.

2. Inventory and map dependencies

List every service, its dependencies, and the data it holds. Identify which services are stateful (databases, caches) and which are stateless (web servers). Stateful services are the hard part — they need careful data migration. Stateless services can be moved with a simple DNS cutover.

3. Replicate, don't just copy

For databases, use replication to keep the new and old instances in sync during the migration window. This means you can cut over at any moment with minimal data loss. For files, use rsync with a final delta sync right before the cutover.

4. The cutover: short and reversible

Keep the actual cutover window as short as possible. Lower your DNS TTL a day in advance, then flip the DNS records to point at the new infrastructure. Because the old system is still running, you can roll back instantly if something goes wrong.

5. Verify before you decommission

After the cutover, verify that traffic is flowing to the new system and that all features work. Keep the old system running for at least 24–48 hours as a safety net before you shut it down.

With this approach, migrations become boring — which is exactly what you want. The goal is not a dramatic switchover, but a quiet one that your users never notice.
